'Lunch and learn' session explores LGBTQI+ history

Staff kicked off the first in a series of 'Lunch and Learn' sessions with a webinar on the history of LGBTQI+

Organised by the newly formed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee, the session was run by Brit Clayton from equality and diversity training experts, Diversiti UK.

Over the span of a lunch break, the teams explored what it means to be LGBTQI+, the origins of key terms and why it’s important to understand the history.

As part of the session, the group explored how we’ve come to be more inclusive as a society and celebrate the diversity of individuals.

Most importantly the teams discussed how they can support colleagues who connect with the LGBTQI+ group.

Attendee, Stephen Draycott, said the session was excellent.

"I didn't have a lot of awareness in this area," he said.  "The trainer gave us a clear explanation of each group with plenty of time for Q&As.

"Brit had patience and understanding, and was really open to our occasional ignorance - in fact, that was welcomed because it was an opportunity for a true definition to be explained.

"I'm really happy that I attended.  I feel I've got a lot more understanding now."

PJ Care has also launched its LGBTQI+ group for staff to network and find support.

"We are committed to equality within PJ Care and it's great to see how well this first session went," said Head of Training, Alex Balicki.  "Our 'Lunch and Learn' sessions will explore a whole range of issues and ideas that celebrate our diversity and create an understanding that brings us all together."
