From hospital porter to operations director

Mark started his career in healthcare as a hospital porter.

Inspired by the staff around him, he decided to train as a nurse and qualified as a registered mental health nurse (RMN) and a registered general nurse (RGN).

Nursing roles took him all around the UK, working in hospitals in Canterbury, Birmingham, Brighton and Bath.

He progressed his career to become a mental health service commissioner for the NHS in the Midlands but then decided to look at opportunities in the care sector.

Mark worked in senior positions with a number of care home companies including European Care, the fifth largest national provider of nursing and residential care facilities, and charity healthcare provider, Sue Ryder.

He came to PJ Care in 2013.

“I came in as Head of Operations and moved up to Director of Operations in December 2014.  My role covers anything and everything non-clinical - whatever is needed to best support our services to provide the highest quality care to our residents.”

Mark says when he met chairman, Neil Russell, and founder of PJ Care, Neil’s mother, Jan Flawn, he knew they had got it “so right”.

“Working at PJ Care has been a million times better than I could have imagined."

“I knew this company was something special and how right I was!  I was immensely impressed by the attitude, energy and commitment of all the staff and also the sheer quality of the environments that the care is delivered in.

“The dedication, pride, application, care, commitment, compassion and sheer hard work of a group of very talented individuals come together to shape a care company that I didn’t ever dared to think could exist.

“I wish I’d met PJ Care years before - these truly are the happiest years of my working life.”
