PJ Care’s ‘STARS’ recognised as our annual awards return

The talents and dedication of our staff were celebrated with the return of the annual PJ Care STAR Awards in May 2022.

We’ve not been able to hold the event for the last two years because of COVID so it was a delight to welcome staff, residents and their families to our fun day and awards ceremony at the MK Dons’ home, Stadium MK.

The range of entertainment offered something for everyone, from face-painting to fairground rides, dance classes to live bands.  But it was the outstanding stories that really made the day.

Team of the Year

The catering staff at Eagle Wood won ‘Team of the Year’ having pulled together in the face of staff shortages during COVID and the sudden and devastating loss of head chef, Richard Hicken.

Catering Manager, Darren Klein, won Manager of the Year, which he says was a “really nice surprise”.

“I’ve put good leaders in place and really focused on developing their skills,” he says. “They really stepped up just when we needed them to and the standard of the food they are producing is getting higher and higher.  But they do it so quietly.  They really are a team and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Nurse of the Year

Faustina Aziiba started work at our Mallar House care centre at the beginning of lockdown but hit the ground running with her ‘can do’ attitude.  Now Clinical Nurse Lead, she is a huge asset to the team. Her manager, Shaun O’Gara, says Faustina is their resident ‘snake charmer’.

“Many of our residents live with young onset dementia and they need a great deal of reassurance.  Faustina has a lovely soft bedside manner and she can coax anyone out of anxiety.”

She also won the award for being a great motivator to her colleagues and developing a culture of self-reliance.
