Jan Flawn CBE, founder of PJ Care, one of the UK’s leading independent providers of specialist neurological care, was honoured by the University as a result of her exceptional contribution to the lives of individuals suffering from neurological conditions.

Ms Flawn, who is still a registered nurse, said: “It’s wonderful to be recognised by the Open University.

“Whilst working in the NHS I saw young people with various neurological conditions having to live in inappropriate care homes for the elderly so in 2000 I started my business, PJ Care, building a small 22 bedded neurological centre in Milton Keynes.”

Today her vision to provide an environment that enables individuals to live comfortably and safely, whilst living life to the full without excessive medication or sedation, has been achieved.

PJ Care now owns seven care units, employs around 500 staff caring for 180 people.”

Ms Flawn was also recognised for her contribution to the lives of women across all sectors of business and industry, by being awarded the First Women of Business Services Award and is currently one of the founding members of the Women Leaders MK Awards.

Women Leaders MK is a prestigious event celebrating outstanding achievement by women leaders in Milton Keynes and will hold its inaugural awards ceremony on November 20.
